Guide on Trapping or Excluding Tyler Flying Squirrels

Traps and exclusion devices can be used by Texas homeowners who are experiencing infestation of Tyler flying squirrel. Different types of traps can be placed all over our house to capture and restrain the animal. Exclusion device enables the flying squirrel to leave our property and will prevent them from returning. This is the recommended method if you want to get rid of them but you don’t want to harm them.

Using Traps to Get Rid of the Flying Squirrels

Traps are only advisable to use if you only have a few Texas flying squirrels. Since this creature will gather on large number, there are times that trapping will not suit your situation. Due to their size, most experts will recommend the use of live traps that are small in size. If you prefer large cage trap, be sure that the squirrel will not be able to squeeze their head on the mesh that will injure them. You also need to check on the trap periodically. Leaving them inside the trap for too long might lead to their death.

When using Texas traps, it is imperative to place them at the appropriate location. Avoid placing them at the center of an open space since the flying squirrel will not interact with the trap. Place it in one corner of the room. In order to draw their attention, you may need to add bait. Place the bait in a manner that will prevent the squirrel from stealing the bait. The best bait would be seeds, nuts, crackers, and peanut butter.

Risks of Using Traps

As we mentioned above, there are situations when using traps to deal with flying rodents will not be the excellent decision. Since the size of the flying squirrel is smaller than the ground and grey squirrel they can easily squeeze through small spaces. Sometimes, they will have the capacity to escape even through spaces that you think are enclosed. During the winter months, the flying squirrels will share their den with the other squirrels. The population of the colony can easily reach 20 squirrels. Using traps against them might be impractical.

Exclusion Device

If trapping would not deliver the best result, then you may try using Texas exclusion funnels. This device is designed to allow the flying squirrel to leave our property but will prevent them from coming back. Simply seal all the possible entry points and install the 1-way exclusion door on the last hole. Leave it for about two weeks. Observe if there are still signs of active infestation. Once you are sure that the infestation has been cleared, remove the exclusion device and seal the last hole. Just like traps, you should also look at your situation when using this device. If it is the nesting season of the flying squirrel, there’s a risk that the baby squirrels will be abandoned and will ultimately die.
